The U.S. Virgin Islands are an unincorporated U.S. territory, which makes the first question a commercial one rather than a technical one. If you are arriving on a mainland U.S. plan, it may already treat the territory as domestic, in which case you need nothing at all. If it does not, or if you are flying in from anywhere else, you need a plan that lists VI by name. The network itself is not the problem : Liberty and Viya serve the three main islands, one mainland carrier runs its own service here, and 4G is solid in the towns.
- ●St Thomas carries most of the capacity. Charlotte Amalie and the cruise harbour, Magens Bay and the ridge road across the island are all comfortable.
- ●St John is a ferry ride from Red Hook. Cruz Bay has service, and the Virgin Islands National Park that covers most of the island, Trunk Bay included, gets patchier the further you walk into it.
- ●St Croix sits further south across open water and behaves like its own destination : Christiansted and Frederiksted are served, Buck Island and Point Udall much less so. The boat crossings between the islands are dead zones, so keep ferry times and bookings on the device.
