Internet in Puerto Rico: everything you need to know
Puerto Rico is a US unincorporated territory and benefits from US carrier coverage. Internet penetration exceeds 86% and 4G/5G mobile coverage reaches 99% of inhabited areas (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Liberty Mobile (Claro PR / América Móvil), T-Mobile US and AT&T are present. US plans generally include Puerto Rico WITHOUT roaming charges.
- ●Dense 4G/5G coverage in San Juan, Bayamón, Carolina, Ponce, Mayagüez. Very good around Caguas, Aguadilla, Rincón and the east coast (Fajardo, Luquillo). Patchier across the central cordillera (Adjuntas, Jayuya), El Yunque National Forest (signal at the visitor center, weak on trails) and on Vieques and Culebra (decent signal in villages, weaker elsewhere).
- ●Average mobile speed ~80–120 Mbps download per Ookla (Q1 2025).
- ●No Western services blocked : Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube, Netflix work normally. WhatsApp and iMessage are widely used.
- ●Great for Uber, Google Maps, Apple Pay (broadly accepted), US banking apps (Chase, Bank of America), ATH Móvil (widely used local mobile money) and Discover Puerto Rico (tourism app).
