December to April is dry, calm at sea and the season when the whales pass Samaná: it is the high season, and it books early. The hurricane season runs June to November with a September peak, and May and November are the best price-to-weather compromise.
The resort and the country are two trips
The eastern beaches are an all-inclusive world with its own logistics, while Santo Domingo, the mountains and the south-west are an ordinary Caribbean country. Mixing the two takes a deliberate plan, not a day excursion.
The hurricane season has a sharp peak
August, September and October carry the risk, September most of all. Hotels offer flexible cancellation over that window, and it is when prices fall furthest.
Coverage follows the towns and the coast road

Iconic sites and coverage
Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo
The first European city in the Americas, with its 1540 cathedral, the Calle las Damas and Diego Columbus's palace. It is all walkable, and the quarter comes alive in the evening.
Punta Cana Beaches
Fifty kilometres of white sand and coconut palms on the eastern point, where most of the country's resorts sit. Bávaro and Macao are very different propositions, one built up and the other open to surfers.
Pico Duarte
The highest peak in the Caribbean, above three thousand metres, reached in two or three days on foot with a mandatory guide and hut nights. It freezes at night in winter, and there is no network on the route.
Samana Whale Bay
A deep north-eastern bay where humpbacks calve each winter, watched from licensed boats. The peninsula keeps its beaches lightly built, and signal weakens along the north coast.
Los Haitises National Park
Limestone hummocks rising out of mangrove, travelled by boat, with caves carrying Taíno petroglyphs. Access is from Sabana de la Mar or Samaná, and there is no coverage in the channels.
Lake Enriquillo
A salt lake below sea level, the lowest point in the Caribbean, home to American crocodiles and flamingos. It is far from everything in the south-west, and the drive takes a full day.
27 Charcos de Damajagua
A series of natural pools and rock slides near Puerto Plata, descended by jumping from one to the next in helmet and vest. How many pools are open depends on the water level.
Jarabacoa Highlands
A mountain valley at a thousand metres, cool year-round, where the rafting and the waterfalls are. They call it the town of eternal spring, and it is the exact counterpoint to the beaches.
