How to choose your eSIM provider
Not all eSIM providers are equal, and the right choice depends first on your destination. Prices for the same operator vary widely from one country to another : a provider that is very competitive in Europe can turn out expensive in Asia or South America, where it relies on different partner networks. Always compare the price per gigabyte for your exact country rather than the provider's headline grid, it is the best way to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Coverage is the second decisive criterion. No provider covers every country, and some are specialised, or even exclusive to one region : operators focused on Asia, on the Middle East or on a single national market. A local player often delivers better speeds and a lower price in its area than a global generalist. So check that your destination is genuinely covered, and look at which local network is used on the ground.
The type of eSIM matters too. Some providers offer disposable eSIMs, valid for the duration of a trip then discarded, while others rely on durable, rechargeable eSIMs that you keep from one trip to the next. Plan formats also differ : fixed data volume, daily plans, unlimited data with a fair-use policy, sometimes calls and texts on top of data. Choose according to how often you travel and your real usage.
The user experience often comes down to overlooked details. The ordering and usage-tracking interfaces are more or less polished from one provider to another : a dedicated app with precise tracking of remaining data, alerts and one-tap top-up, or a plain e-mail containing a QR code. The top-up, expiry and refund policy, the responsiveness of customer support and the languages offered make the difference the day a problem arises.
Beyond price and coverage, a provider's ethics and governance can weigh in too : the company's jurisdiction, applicable laws, its handling and retention of personal data, and transparency about the networks used. For professional or sensitive use, these trust and privacy criteria deserve as much attention as the advertised price.
