How we calculate

We start from reference rates, expressed in megabytes per hour of active use, then multiply them by the time you spend on each activity. The values are deliberately conservative: a calculator gives a range, not a bill.

ActivityUsage
MessagingWhatsApp, iMessage, voice notes5 MB/h
Social mediaInstagram, Facebook, X150 MB/h

These rates are 2026 orders of magnitude. Real usage varies with video quality, network and apps. Always leave a little headroom.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does the average traveller use?

A typical traveller (messaging, maps, some social media and browsing) uses between 300 and 700 MB per day. Video streaming and tethering push that figure up quickly.

How many GB for a week abroad?

For moderate use, 3 to 5 GB is usually enough for a week. If you watch video or share your connection, plan for 10 GB or an unlimited plan.

Does hotel Wi-Fi reduce my usage?

Yes, significantly. If you download your shows and update your apps on Wi-Fi, your eSIM is only used out and about: a small plan can then be enough.

Is an unlimited plan better?

Unlimited makes sense for constant streaming, remote work or long stays. For classic use, a fixed-volume plan is often cheaper per GB.
