Asia eSIM: your travel data guide
From Tokyo to Bangkok, Bali to Delhi: everything you need to stay connected in Asia with an eSIM.
Asia at a glance
Asia spans about 44.5 million kmยฒ across 48 countries, from Japan in the east to Turkey in the west. It is the world's largest and most populous continent: over 4.7 billion people, 60% of the global population.
For an eSIM traveller, Asia splits into four very different sub-regions: East Asia (Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan) with world-class connectivity, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines) with excellent urban 4G/5G, South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan) in the middle of a 4G transformation, and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan) playing catch-up.
Asia hosts the world's most advanced 5G countries (South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan all sit in Ookla's mobile-speed top 5). At the other end, mainland China runs its own internet (Great Firewall) that blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube and Wikipedia: a travel eSIM with a non-China APN or a VPN is essential.

Connectivity and networks in Asia
4G/5G: South Korea and Singapore offer near-universal 5G coverage; Japan and Hong Kong have 5G in every major city. China runs the world's largest 5G network by tower count. In Southeast Asia, 5G is deployed across the big cities (Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, Manila); 4G remains the norm elsewhere.
Average speeds (Ookla Q1 2025): South Korea 140-180 Mbps, Singapore 110-130 Mbps, Hong Kong 110-140 Mbps, Japan 80-110 Mbps, Thailand / Vietnam / Malaysia 40-80 Mbps, Indonesia / Philippines / India 30-70 Mbps, Pakistan / Bangladesh / Sri Lanka 15-40 Mbps.
No cross-country roaming in Asia like the EU/EEA. Each country bills separately. For a multi-country trip (e.g. Thailand + Vietnam + Singapore), a regional Asia eSIM (10 to 22 countries) is the cheapest route, saving 70 to 90% vs. classic international roaming.
Trains and tunnels: continuous mobile coverage on Japan's Shinkansen, Korea's KTX, the China High-Speed Rail (notably Beijing-Shanghai), Taiwan HSR, Hong Kong's MTR and Bangkok's BTS/MRT. Long tunnels (Seikan, Gotemba) can cause brief drops.
Restrictions and the Great Firewall: in mainland China, Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube, Wikipedia, Gmail and Facebook are all blocked. Workaround: a travel eSIM with an international APN (Airalo, Holafly, eSIMx, BNESIMโฆ) bypasses the Great Firewall by routing traffic via Hong Kong. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan remain free. Other Asian countries (Japan, Korea, SEA, India) impose no restrictions on Western services.
