Internet in the BVI: coverage is a chart of anchorages
More visitors here sleep on a boat than in a hotel, and the network has been built around that. Capacity sits where the charter fleet stops : Road Town and the marinas, Soper's Hole, Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke, Spanish Town and North Sound on Virgin Gorda. Those are the places where a few hundred extra devices arrive at anchor each evening, and where a signal is genuinely reliable. Under way between islands it is line of sight to whichever hill is nearest, which in a compact archipelago is usually enough, but never something to plan a passage around.
- ●Tortola carries the bulk of it, from Road Town and Beef Island airport along the ridge road to Cane Garden Bay. Virgin Gorda is the second strong island, covering Spanish Town, The Baths and the North Sound mooring fields. Peak charter season, roughly December to April, puts real load on those same harbours in the evening.
- ●Jost Van Dyke works around Great Harbour and White Bay with dead spots in the sheltered coves. Anegada, flat coral fifteen miles north of the rest, has thin coverage that fades quickly away from The Settlement. Norman Island and the uninhabited anchorages rely entirely on what the nearest inhabited island throws across the water.
- ●One practical warning for a chartered week : the US Virgin Islands are a separate country with a separate plan, and from high ground on Tortola their network is often the strongest thing your phone can see. Set network selection to manual at the start of the trip and choose a local carrier.

Frequently asked questions
Will I have signal while sailing between the islands?
Usually, because the archipelago is compact and hilly, but it is line of sight and it drops. Download charts and forecasts in the harbour, not under way.
Does a US Virgin Islands plan work here?
No. The BVI is a separate country code. You need a plan that names the British Virgin Islands or BVI explicitly.
How do I stop my phone picking up the USVI network?
Switch network selection to manual and pick a BVI carrier. From high ground on Tortola the American network is frequently the strongest signal available.
Is Anegada covered?
Around The Settlement and the main road, yes, but thinly. It is flat, lightly populated and well north of the rest of the group.
How much data for a charter week?
5 GB covers maps, messaging, marine forecasts and photos. Go to 10 GB if you work from Road Town or Virgin Gorda.
