Internet in St. Vincent: the network was built for boats

Most visitors arrive here by water and move south island by island, and the network reflects that. Flow and Digicel put capacity where boats stop : Admiralty Bay on Bequia, Clifton on Union Island, the harbours of Canouan and Mustique, and of course Kingstown. Between anchorages, out in open water, you are on whatever the nearest island throws out to sea, which is often more than you expect because the Grenadines are low, close together and in line of sight of one another. The main island is the opposite case : volcanic, steep, and full of valleys the signal never reaches.

  • ●Kingstown, Argyle airport and the southern coast of the main island are the strongest ground. Inland is unreliable fast : the Mesopotamia valley sits in the shadow of its own ridges, and the climb towards La Soufrière goes offline well before the summit. Dark View Falls on the leeward coast has signal at the road, not in the gorge.
  • ●Bequia is the best-served island after St. Vincent itself, with real coverage around Port Elizabeth. Canouan, Mustique and Union Island all work across their settled areas. The Tobago Cays, an uninhabited marine park, have no tower of their own : you sometimes catch Union Island from the anchorage, and sometimes nothing.
  • ●If you are chartering, download charts, forecasts and ferry schedules while alongside rather than relying on finding a signal under way. Hurricane season runs June to November and it affects inter-island ferries and light flights long before it affects anything else.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate plan for the Grenadines?

No. Every island shares one country code, so a single entry covers St. Vincent, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan and Union Island alike.

Will I have signal while sailing between islands?

Often, because the islands are low and close together, but not dependably. Download charts and forecasts while you are alongside.

Why does coverage drop so close to Kingstown?

The main island is steep and volcanic. Inland valleys sit in the radio shadow of their own ridges, even a short distance from a tower.

Is there coverage in the Tobago Cays?

Rarely and not reliably. The marine park is uninhabited with no tower of its own; you may catch Union Island from the anchorage.

How much data for a week?

5 GB covers maps, messaging, ferry times and photos. Go to 10 GB if you work from Bequia or share a lot of video.
