Hurricane Maria went over Dominica in September 2017 and took most of the island's telecommunications with it. What came back was not the old network patched up : towers were re-sited, backhaul was rerouted, and a good deal of the distribution went underground where the terrain allowed it. The practical consequence for a visitor today is a service that is better than the island's size and budget would suggest along the inhabited coast, and still essentially absent in the interior, because no amount of rebuilding puts a tower in a rainforest gorge.

• ●Roseau and the west coast up to Portsmouth are the strongest ground, including the Cabrits headland and the Indian River. Calibishie on the north-east coast and Scotts Head at the southern tip work in the village. The cross-island road dips in and out of signal as it passes through the valleys between them.
• ●The interior is where you plan for nothing. Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Trafalgar Falls, the Valley of Desolation and the day-long walk to the Boiling Lake have no useful coverage across most of their length. Segments of the Waitukubuli Trail alternate between connected villages and long unserved stretches, which is worth knowing before you set off on one.
• ●June to November is hurricane and rain season, and on an island this steep the rain matters as much as the wind : flooding closes secondary roads and takes out power to isolated sites. Download trail maps, bookings and ferry times rather than relying on fetching them when you need them.
