Internet in St. Lucia: the resort is not the problem
Almost every St. Lucia itinerary includes two excursions, and both of them are exactly where connectivity gets interesting. One is the catamaran down the west coast towards the Pitons. The other is the road from Castries to Soufriere, which does not run along the shore but climbs ridge after forested ridge above it. Flow and Digicel cover the coastal strip and the towns perfectly adequately, with 5G in the populated north-west (sources: Internet Society Pulse, ITU DataHub). It is the island's volcanic spine, not its network, that decides where your phone works.
- ●Base yourself in the north-west and nothing is hard. Rodney Bay, the village at Gros Islet, the causeway out to Pigeon Island and Castries itself with its cruise berths are all well served, and that is where most trips are booked and most calls get made.
- ●The drive south is the honest surprise. Between Marigot Bay and Soufriere the road crosses high ground repeatedly and the signal comes and goes with the hairpins, so a live navigation app is the wrong tool for that hour. Once you arrive, Soufriere, the Sulphur Springs mud baths, Toraille waterfall and the viewpoints under Gros Piton and Petit Piton are connected again.
- ●Two places to treat as offline, plus one season. The trails through the Edmund forest reserve in the interior have no useful coverage, and neither does much of the water once a catamaran is past the headlands. Hurricane season runs from June into November, which is a further reason to keep weather alerts and your bookings available without a connection. Vieux Fort and Anse des Sables in the far south, by the airport, are back on the network.

Frequently asked questions
Does a "Caribbean" plan include St. Lucia?
Not always. Regional lists differ considerably between providers, so check for St. Lucia by name, especially if your trip takes in several islands.
Which network will my eSIM use?
Flow or Digicel, depending on your provider's agreements. Both cover the coast and the towns on 4G, with 5G in the north-west.
Is there signal on the road to Soufriere?
Intermittently. The road crosses several ridges and the connection comes and goes. Download your map before leaving Castries rather than relying on live navigation.
What about the rainforest and the Pitons?
Towns and developed sites are covered. The Edmund forest trails and the approaches to Gros Piton are best treated as offline, so carry maps and tickets locally.
How much data for a week?
5 to 10 GB covers maps, messaging, bookings and photos. Add more if you upload video or work from the island.
