Internet in Montserrat: small enough that one base covers it
Montserrat rewards a different kind of planning from most Caribbean destinations. The part of the island people live on is a strip barely ten kilometres across, served by both Flow and Digicel, and you can reach any of it in under an hour from wherever you are staying. That removes the usual question of which town to sleep in for the signal : there is effectively one coverage zone, and you are in it. What remains is a single deliberate exception, the volcanic exclusion zone to the south, which has no residents and therefore no masts.
- ●Little Bay is the working port and the island's new centre, Brades serves as the de facto capital, and Salem sits just below them. All three have 4G, and any of them works as a base.
- ●The Montserrat Volcano Observatory, perched on the edge of the restricted area, is both the best explanation of what you are looking at and a place with service. The guided trips down into Plymouth, the capital buried under ash, are not : that stretch is offline by design. Add the Centre Hills trails, Rendezvous Bluff and its white-sand beach in the north, and Jack Boy Hill on the east coast for the main viewpoints.
- ●Access is via Antigua, by ferry or a short flight, on a schedule with little slack. Keep boarding passes, contacts and offline maps on the device, because handling a cancellation from a quayside with no signal is the realistic failure mode.

Frequently asked questions
Is there coverage in the exclusion zone?
No. Nobody lives there and no masts are maintained, so the Plymouth trips run offline. Download maps beforehand.
Do I need to pick a base for the signal?
Not really. The inhabited north is compact and both carriers serve it, so any of Little Bay, Brades or Salem works.
Does an Antigua bundle cover Montserrat?
Not necessarily, despite the ferry link. Check the itemised country list before buying.
Country plan or Caribbean bundle?
A bundle pays off if you are island-hopping. For a trip that stays on Montserrat, the country plan is usually cheaper.
How much data for a week?
3 to 5 GB is plenty. The island is small and part of the sightseeing happens with no signal anyway.
