Internet in Myanmar: everything you need to know

Myanmar's mobile coverage is concentrated in cities: the carriers (MPT, Ooredoo, Atom, Mytel) offer decent 4G in Yangon and Mandalay, patchier elsewhere. Since the February 2021 coup, the country has faced severe instability, frequent internet restrictions and regional shutdowns. The economy runs largely on cash and US dollars, and buying a local SIM on site can be hard for a visitor. A prepaid eSIM, bought and activated before departure, avoids that friction.

  • Serviceable 4G in Yangon (Shwedagon Pagoda) and Mandalay; weaker in Bagan, on Inle Lake and in Shan State. Many border and rural areas stay poorly served or under local restrictions.
  • An honesty note: an eSIM roams on Myanmar networks and remains subject to the same national filtering. Facebook and various services have been restricted since 2021, and regional internet shutdowns are ordered by the authorities. An eSIM does not bypass censorship; some travelers use a VPN, but local law restricts such tools, so check the current rules yourself.
  • Note that no eSIM restores a network cut: during a regional or national shutdown, the connection is unavailable for everyone. Carry offline maps and keep cash (crisp US dollars and kyats). Burmese dominates and English is limited outside tourist sites, so reliable data for translation helps a lot.

Frequently asked questions

Why an eSIM rather than a local SIM in Myanmar?

Because the economy runs largely on cash and US dollars, and buying a local SIM on site is uncertain for a visitor. A travel eSIM is bought and activated with your usual card before departure, with no local paperwork.

Does an eSIM let me reach blocked sites in Myanmar?

No. The eSIM roams on Myanmar networks and faces the same filtering: Facebook and various services have been restricted since 2021. An eSIM provides data, not a way around censorship. Some travelers use a VPN, but local law restricts it: check the current rules.

Does the eSIM work well in Myanmar?

Yes for data coverage in cities: international eSIMs roam on MPT, Ooredoo, Atom or Mytel, with decent 4G in Yangon and Mandalay. Coverage weakens in Bagan, on Inle Lake and in rural areas; regional shutdowns can occur.

How much data for a trip to Myanmar?

For ten days across Yangon, Bagan and Inle Lake, 5–10 GB covers offline maps, translation and messaging. Add margin, as the connection can be irregular by region.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Myanmar eSIM plans allow hotspot: the field is shown on each offer detail page.
