Internet in Laos: everything you need to know
Laos has roughly 67 % internet penetration and over 85 % 4G mobile coverage (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Unitel (a Viettel subsidiary) has the best rural footprint, followed by Lao Telecom and ETL. 5G is nascent in Vientiane only.
- β4G coverage in all cities (Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Pakse, Savannakhet, Phonsavan) and along Route 13 (Vientiane-Luang Prabang-Boten). Decent around the 4000 Islands (Don Det, Don Khon, Don Khong : Unitel covers most of it). Patchier on the Bolaven Plateau (Pakse β Tad Lo, Tad Fane : signal in villages), Nong Khiaw, Muang Ngoy and the Thakhek loop (Konglor cave).
- βAverage mobile speed ~20β35 Mbps download per Ookla (Q1 2025) β the lowest in the peninsula.
- βNo Western services blocked : Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube, Netflix work normally. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are dominant for hotel/restaurant contacts.
- βGreat for Loca (Vientiane local taxi, Grab alternative), Google Maps, offline Maps.me (essential outside cities), BCEL One (banking) and travel apps (Lao Skyway for domestic flights).

How much data for 2 weeks in Laos?
For Vientiane + Luang Prabang + Vang Vieng + 4000 Islands, plan 5β8 GB : offline Maps (essential), WhatsApp/Messenger, cloud photos, some streaming. Less if you spend most time in nature.

Thakhek : signal in town, weak on the loop (Konglor, mountain road). Download offline Maps and iOverlander. 4000 Islands : Unitel covers Don Det and Don Khon, decent signal in guesthouses. Weaker on waterfall trails.
