Vietnam does not have one season but three, because it stretches across fifteen degrees of latitude. March, April, October and November are the best compromise for travelling the length of the country without hitting the monsoon or the heaviest heat.
Three climates, one country
The north has a real winter, cool and often misty in Hanoi and Sapa. The centre takes its rain in autumn, well after everywhere else. The south stays hot year round with short downpours from May to October. Any north-south itinerary therefore crosses an imperfect season somewhere.
The network is better than you expect
The facts block below shows an average download speed well above what most visitors assume for the region, and 4G reaches effectively the whole population. The gaps are vertical rather than horizontal: the mountain valleys of the north and the limestone caves of the centre, not the cities.
Tet shuts the country down
Lunar New Year is the one week Vietnam stops: shops closed, transport full, and much of the hospitality workforce gone home. The dates move between late January and mid-February depending on the year.
Crossing the road has a technique
You walk at a steady pace and do not stop; the traffic flows around you. Stopping halfway is what causes problems. Hiring a motorbike yourself is a separate question, and one most travel insurance policies answer with a no unless you hold the right licence.
Iconic sites and coverage
Ha Long Bay
Close to two thousand limestone pillars rise out of shallow water in the north-east. It is visited by junk over one or two nights, and mist is common, which is part of the landscape rather than a spoiled view.
Hoi An Ancient Town
A former trading port the wars largely spared, Hoi An kept its Chinese and Japanese merchant houses. The lanterns lit in the evening have become its signature, and the town is small enough to cover entirely on foot.
Hue Imperial City
The Nguyen emperors' capital was largely destroyed in 1968 and its restoration is still unfinished. What stands, and what is missing, tell the country's story more directly than any museum.
Hanoi Old Quarter
A grid of streets each once named for a trade, several of which still carry it. You cross the traffic at a steady pace without stopping, which is counter-intuitive and works.
Mekong Delta
A maze of channels, orchards and floating markets south of Ho Chi Minh City. The markets run early, often before six, and seen later there is little left to look at.
Sapa Rice Terraces
On the Chinese border, the stepped terraces of the Hmong and Dao valleys are walked over several days. Sharp green arrives in summer, gold just before the September harvest, and the winter up there is genuinely cold.
Phong Nha Caves
The karst massif in the centre holds some of the largest known cave passages, one of them big enough to contain its own jungle. The longer expeditions book out months ahead and run with no signal at all.
Cu Chi Tunnels
A network of tens of miles north-west of Ho Chi Minh City, dug during the war. The sections open to visitors have been widened, which conveys the dimensions without reproducing them.
