Internet in Iran: everything you need to know

Iran's mobile network is extensive: the carriers (MCI/Hamrah-e Avval, Irancell, Rightel) offer good 4G/LTE in Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz and most cities. Two realities weigh heavily on travelers: because of international sanctions, foreign Visa and Mastercard do not work in Iran, and internet access is among the most heavily filtered in the world. A prepaid eSIM, bought and activated before departure, addresses the first point by avoiding any on-site payment and registering a local SIM.

  • Good 4G in Tehran, Isfahan (Naqsh-e Jahan Square), Shiraz, Yazd and Persepolis. Remote desert and mountain areas are less covered. The country is a cash economy for the visitor: bring euros or US dollars in cash to exchange locally.
  • An honesty note: an eSIM roams on Iranian networks and is therefore subject to the same, very extensive, national filtering. Many platforms are blocked (Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Telegram, X and many sites), and shutdowns or heavy restrictions occur during tensions. An eSIM does not bypass censorship; many residents and travelers use a VPN, but local law restricts such tools, so check the current rules yourself.
  • Note that no eSIM restores a network cut at national scale: during a shutdown ordered by the authorities, the connection is unavailable for everyone. Persian dominates and English is present in tourism, so reliable data for translation, maps and messaging is valuable.

Frequently asked questions

Why an eSIM rather than a local SIM in Iran?

Because foreign Visa and Mastercard do not work in Iran due to sanctions: you cannot pay online or by card on site, and buying a local SIM means dealing with a counter. A travel eSIM is bought and activated with your usual card before departure.

Does an eSIM let me reach blocked sites in Iran?

No. The eSIM roams on Iranian networks and faces the same, very extensive filtering: Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Telegram, X and many sites are blocked. An eSIM provides data, not a way around censorship. Many use a VPN, but local law restricts it: check the current rules.

Does the eSIM work well in Iran?

Yes for data coverage: international eSIMs roam on MCI, Irancell or Rightel, with good 4G in cities. Remote desert and mountain areas are less covered, and network restrictions can occur during tensions.

How much data for a trip to Iran?

For ten days across Tehran, Isfahan, Yazd and Shiraz, 5–10 GB covers maps, translation and messaging. Add margin if you use a VPN, which uses more data.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Iran eSIM plans allow hotspot: the field is shown on each offer detail page.
