Internet in Angola: everything you need to know

Angola has roughly 35% internet penetration and 4G mobile coverage exceeding 70% of the population (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). The mobile market is dominated by Unitel (incumbent, ~70% share), Movicel (~20%) and Africell, which entered in 2022 after liberalisation and is pushing prices down. 5G is at pilot stage in Luanda (Unitel).

  • Dense 4G in Luanda (Talatona, Miramar, Ingombota, Maianga, Belas), Benguela, Lobito, Lubango, Huambo, Cabinda, Soyo, Namibe (Moçâmedes). Decent on the coastal road Luanda-Lobito-Namibe (RN100). Patchier in Cuanza-Sul (Sumbe, Porto Amboim: 4G in city centres only), Malanje province (Kissama park, Kalandula falls: 3G/EDGE), Namibe desert (signal in towns only), Bié and Moxico (very limited).
  • Average mobile speed ~15–25 Mbps download in Luanda per Ookla (Q1 2025).
  • Mandatory SIM registration (INACOM law) for physical SIMs : passport + visa required. An international travel eSIM avoids the paperwork and queueing at Unitel/Movicel shops.
  • Great for Multicaixa Express (mobile payments), Unitel Money and Africa Money (mobile money), Google Maps, offline Maps.me for tracks (essential outside Luanda), Yango (Luanda taxi, local equivalent), TAAG (domestic flights), WhatsApp (universal).

Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM really work in Angola?

Yes in Luanda and major cities. International eSIMs connect to Unitel or Movicel on landing at Quatro de Fevereiro (LAD), Catumbela (CBT) or Lubango (SDD).

Do I need a visa or registration to activate the eSIM?

No, an international travel eSIM doesn't require passport or visa to activate : that's the main benefit over a Unitel/Movicel SIM that needs INACOM registration.

How much data for 2 weeks in Angola?

For Luanda + Benguela/Lobito + Kissama park, plan 3–7 GB : Google Maps, WhatsApp, cloud photos, navigation, little streaming (Africell offers Netflix bundles but locally). Offline Maps.me essential.

Is there signal in the Namibe desert and at Kalandula?

Namibe desert : 4G in Moçâmedes and Tômbwa, very limited in Iona NP — plan escorted expedition. Kalandula falls : decent signal in the village, weak at viewpoints.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Angola eSIM plans allow hotspot : the field is shown on each Datadopt offer detail page.
