Internet in Portugal: everything you need to know

Portugal shows an internet penetration of around 88% and one of the best mobile footprints in southern Europe (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). 4G LTE covers the entire mainland and 5G is broadly deployed in every major city. A Portugal eSIM gets you onto this network the moment you land in Lisbon, Porto or Faro.

  • ●4G/5G coverage across every major city (Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Coimbra) and tourist destinations (Algarve, Douro, Alentejo).
  • ●Average mobile download speeds around 75 to 95 Mbps per Ookla (Q1 2025) : among the fastest in Europe.
  • ●For EU/EEA travelers, roaming is charged at the domestic rate (RLAH); a dedicated eSIM stays useful for non-EU travelers (UK, Switzerland, US).
  • ●Perfect for Bolt, Uber, CP (national trains), Google Maps and booking apps.

When to go

April to June and September to October are the two best windows: warm without excess, the cities breathing, and prices back down. July and August still work, but those are the two months when the Algarve and Lisbon run at full capacity.

The sea is Atlantic, not Mediterranean

Even in August the water stays cool along almost the whole coast, because the current comes from the north. The Algarve is the mildest stretch; the west coast beaches are spectacular and rarely swimmable for long.

Connectivity is not the constraint here

The facts block below shows one of the better-covered countries on the site, with 5G reaching effectively the whole population. The gaps are the Atlantic islands and the deeper valleys, not the mainland, so an eSIM here is about avoiding roaming charges rather than finding signal.

The train covers the spine

Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto are linked by a fast, comfortable line, and Sintra is a suburban hop from Lisbon. For the Douro and the Alentejo a car opens up considerably more.

Lunch is the serious meal

Kitchens run roughly noon to three and then seven-thirty to ten, and the midday set menu is where the value is. The bread and olives put on the table are chargeable, which surprises people on the first bill.

Iconic sites and coverage

Belem Tower

A fortified guard post standing in the Tagus, built when Portuguese caravels were leaving from here for India and Brazil. The inside is cramped and the queue long: the view from the bank already earns the walk.

Good coverage on site

Jeronimos Monastery

The monastery was paid for by the tax on spices brought back from the Indies, and its Manueline stonework is covered in ropes and sailors' knots. Vasco da Gama is buried a few metres inside the door.

Good coverage on site

Porto Ribeira

The Douro-side district is a stack of narrow houses under the Luis I bridge. The port cellars are on the far bank in Vila Nova de Gaia, which means crossing the bridge on foot, itself worth the trip.

Good coverage on site

Sintra Pena Palace

A nineteenth-century romantic palace painted yellow and red, sitting on a ridge that is often in cloud. The park around it is as interesting as the building and far less crowded.

Good coverage on site

Douro Valley

Terraced vines run down to the river on slopes reshaped by hand over two centuries. The valley can be done by car, by boat, or on the railway line that follows the water.

Good coverage on site

Benagil Sea Cave

A sandstone cathedral open at the roof, reachable only from the water, on the Algarve coast. Swimming in is now regulated, and summer numbers match its fame.

Patchy coverage on site

Pico Volcano

Portugal's highest point is a volcanic cone in the middle of the Atlantic, in the Azores. The climb requires registration, takes a full day, and signal stops well before the summit.

Patchy coverage on sitePlan for offline

Sao Miguel Crater Lakes

Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo fill old craters whose water reads a different colour depending on depth and light. The viewpoints are often inside the cloud, so going twice at different hours is not a wasted idea.

Frequently asked questions

Do eSIMs really work in Portugal?

Yes. The vast majority of international eSIMs connect to MEO, Vodafone PT or NOS the moment you land at Lisbon, Porto or Faro. Excellent country-wide coverage on the mainland.

Do I need a VPN in Portugal?

No. All Western services work normally.

Can I use my EU plan in Portugal?
