Internet in Tanzania: everything you need to know
Tanzania has 35% internet penetration and ~80% 4G mobile coverage (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). An eSIM connects to Vodacom, Airtel or Tigo on landing at Dar es Salaam (DAR), Zanzibar (ZNZ) or Kilimanjaro (JRO). Coverage is solid on Zanzibar but uneven in the national parks.
- ●4G coverage in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma and across Zanzibar (Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje, Kendwa) ; variable in parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) — good at main lodges, none deep in the savannah.
- ●Average mobile speed ~20–30 Mbps download per Ookla (Q1 2025) ; Vodacom dominates national coverage.
- ●No Western services blocked: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube and Netflix work normally.
- ●Great for Uber (Dar/Arusha), Bolt, offline Maps for safaris, M-Pesa (mobile money is dominant) and NMB / CRDB banking apps.
