Who is Nomad? Meet the eSIM operator

Nomad is a travel eSIM provider launched in 2020, positioned as a simple, modern consumer app. Its promise: stay connected abroad within minutes, with no physical SIM card and no store visit, through a global catalog of data plans activated straight from your phone.

Like the other players in the market, Nomad does not run its own network: the brand resells access to local partner operators in each destination, under a unified technical and commercial layer. Your iPhone or your Android device connects to the best network available locally, which explains the broad coverage and the variability of 4G/5G speeds from one country to the next.

Nomad distributes two main ranges: fixed-volume plans (1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 20 GB for 7 to 30 days), designed for a targeted trip on a controlled budget, and daily unlimited data plans, suited to long stays, streaming and tethering. This dual range covers occasional travelers as well as the digital nomads who work on the move.

The Nomad app (iOS and Android) handles QR code installation, top-ups, data tracking and customer support. It is one of the most praised aspects among users: the mobile experience is smooth, which is reflected in one of the highest App Store ratings in the industry and tens of thousands of positive reviews.

Is Nomad reliable? With several tens of thousands of Trustpilot reviews, an App Store rating of 4.79/5 and a clear refund policy (credit or refund as long as the eSIM has not been activated), Nomad reputation is one of the most solid in the travel eSIM market. The usual industry caveats remain: variable speeds depending on the local operator, blocks in China without a VPN, and no real phone number on data plans.

Nomad reviews: what do the 60,000+ users say?

Datadopt aggregates the ratings from the three main review platforms (Trustpilot, App Store, Google Play) to give you an objective picture of Nomad reputation. Here is the up-to-date data:

Trustpilot

4.3/5

37,871 reviews

App Store (iOS)

4.8/5

15,239 reviews

Google Play (Android)

4.6/5

14,024 reviews

Recurring strengths

  • Exceptionally well-rated app, one of the best App Store ratings in the eSIM industry
  • Very high review volume on Trustpilot and both stores: a reputation hard to ignore
  • Simple, guided installation and data tracking from the app
  • Good price/volume ratio, especially on regional plans for Asia and the Americas

Points to watch

  • Speeds sometimes below the advertised 4G depending on the local partner operator
  • China: requires a VPN, like all eSIMs that route through Chinese operators
  • No real phone line on standard plans (data only)
  • Customer support mostly via chat and email, with no dedicated phone line

Our take: Nomad is a sound choice for travelers who want a polished app, a reassuring reputation and a good price/volume ratio, whether for a short trip (fixed-volume plans) or a long journey with streaming (unlimited data plans). Against Airalo, Nomad stands out mainly for the perceived quality of its app and support; against Holafly, it offers more fixed-volume plans for smaller budgets.

Nomad coverage: where do the plans work?

Nomad offers eSIM plans in more than 170 destinations, grouped into three ranges: single-country, regional (Europe, Asia, Americas, Middle East, Africa) and multi-continent global on a single eSIM. Here are the destinations most searched by travelers.

โš ๏ธ A warning for China

Like all travel eSIM providers that rely on local Chinese operators, the Nomad China eSIM is subject to the Great Firewall: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube are blocked. Install a VPN before you leave (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN, Mullvad), since it is impossible to download one once you are there. Also check the plan 4G coverage note before buying.

Nomad plan types

Country plan (fixed volume)

A set amount (1 GB to 20 GB) for 7 to 30 days. The most economical format for a targeted trip (Japan 15 days, United States 7 days, Morocco 30 days).

Country plan (unlimited data)

Unlimited data per day, with throttled speed beyond heavy usage depending on the destination. Ideal for long stays, remote work and tethering.

Regional plan

A single eSIM for several neighboring countries: Europe, Asia, North and Latin America, Middle East. Handy for a multi-country itinerary without switching eSIMs.

Global plan

An eSIM that covers many countries across several continents. Useful for round-the-world trips, digital nomads and multi-destination travel.

Nomad FAQ

How do I install and activate a Nomad eSIM?โ–พ

Two options. Automatic installation via the Nomad app (iOS and Android): open the app, select your plan, follow the setup assistant that configures the eSIM for you. Manual installation via QR code: the QR is sent by email after payment. On iPhone: Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Add eSIM โ†’ scan the QR. On Android: Settings โ†’ Network & internet โ†’ SIMs โ†’ Download a SIM. Activation usually kicks in the first time you connect to the foreign network.

When should I install and activate the Nomad eSIM: before or after the trip?โ–พ

Install before you leave (at home, on WiFi) to confirm that the QR code and the eSIM work. Activate on site in most cases: the plan duration starts the first time it latches onto a network abroad. Some plans activate at the moment of installation: check the activation policy shown on the plan details before buying.

Does Nomad work in China? Do I need a VPN?โ–พ

Yes, China is covered, but since the Nomad eSIM routes through a Chinese operator, the Great Firewall blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Install a VPN (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad) on your phone before you leave. Unlike Holafly, which offers a "China with VPN" option, Nomad does not provide a built-in VPN.

Can I use WhatsApp, TikTok and tethering (hotspot) with Nomad?โ–พ

WhatsApp and TikTok: yes on all plans outside China (see previous question). Tethering (hotspot) is allowed on most Nomad plans. A few regional or global plans may restrict it: the note appears in the details of each offer on Datadopt.

How much does Nomad cost? Is there a promo code?โ–พ

Prices start at around a few euros for 1 GB / 7 days in Europe and rise depending on the destination, duration and volume. Nomad does not release a public promo code: the best way to get a good price is to compare plans on Datadopt then subscribe through our partner link. Regional and unlimited plans often offer a better price/GB ratio on long stays.

Can I make calls or send texts with Nomad?โ–พ

No on standard plans: they are data only. For calls and texts, use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Google Voice or Skype over Nomad data. You also keep your usual number on your main SIM if you leave it active alongside the eSIM.

Is my phone compatible with Nomad?โ–พ

iPhone XS and later (2018+), Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3+, Xiaomi 13+, recent Motorola Razr, Huawei P40+, Honor Magic 4+, OnePlus 11+ global versions and Sony Xperia 1 IV+. Check our complete eSIM smartphone compatibility guide for the detailed list by model and region (Chinese and Hong Kong versions of iPhone / Xiaomi are excluded).

Nomad or Airalo: which should you choose?โ–พ

Nomad = top-rated app, solid reputation, a good balance between fixed-volume and unlimited data plans. Airalo = larger catalog in number of destinations and plans, with a very economical Standard range. The two are comparable on many trips: compare case by case on Datadopt based on your destination and budget.

Nomad or Holafly: which should you choose?โ–พ

Nomad = more fixed-volume plans for smaller budgets and short stays, a polished app. Holafly = unlimited data with permissive fair use and 24/7 support, but a higher price and fewer fixed-volume plans. Choose based on your priority: budget control (Nomad) or unlimited without counting (Holafly).

Fixed-volume or unlimited data with Nomad: which range should you choose?โ–พ

Fixed volume = ideal if you know your usual consumption (~500 MB/day for light use, ~1 GB/day for social use), with a controlled price. Unlimited data = ideal if you plan on streaming, remote work or shared use, with a daily high-speed cap then a reduced speed. Check the availability of the unlimited range for your destination before buying.
