Internet in Venezuela: everything you need to know

Venezuela has roughly 55–65% internet penetration, with mobile coverage concentrated in the coastal cities and the Andes (source: ITU DataHub). Three carriers share the market: Digitel (often the most reliable for 4G data), Movistar (Telefónica) and Movilnet (state-owned, via CANTV). Commercial 5G is not deployed, and the network stays sensitive to the power cuts that regularly hit connectivity outside urban centres.

  • Decent 4G in Caracas (Chacao, Las Mercedes, Altamira, Sabana Grande, El Hatillo), Maracaibo, Valencia, Barquisimeto, Maracay, Mérida (city and the lower Mukumbarí cable-car station), San Cristóbal, Puerto La Cruz and on Margarita Island (Porlamar, Pampatar). Patchier or none at Los Roques (archipelago: rare Wi-Fi, almost no data), Canaima and Angel Falls (NO signal, canoe/plane trips), the Gran Sabana and Roraima (tepuis: NONE), the Orinoco delta and the Venezuelan Amazon.
  • The network depends heavily on electricity: power cuts (frequent outside Caracas) drop the signal. Carry a power bank and download Google Maps / Maps.me offline before any trip to Mérida, the Gran Sabana or Los Llanos.
  • Great for WhatsApp (universal), Pago Móvil (interbank mobile payment, OMNIPRESENT and essential given the cash shortage), Zelle (widely used for USD payments), Mercado Libre, Yummy and Ridery (Caracas ride-hailing), inDrive. Many shops run on USD cash + Pago Móvil: reliable data to confirm payments is valuable.

Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM really work in Venezuela?

Yes in cities and on the coast. International eSIMs connect to Digitel, Movistar or Movilnet on landing at Caracas (CCS), Maracaibo (MAR) or Margarita (PMV). In remote areas (Los Roques, Canaima, Gran Sabana) the signal is weak or absent whatever the carrier.

Do I need an eSIM if I have a European plan?

Venezuela is not in EU inclusive roaming and out-of-plan data is very expensive. A travel eSIM is far cheaper and avoids buying a local SIM, which is impractical for a visitor.

How much data for two weeks in Venezuela?

For Caracas + Mérida + Margarita or Los Roques, plan 5–10 GB: WhatsApp, offline Google Maps and Maps.me, Pago Móvil, Zelle, ride-hailing (Yummy/Ridery) and cloud photos. Download offline maps, coverage is irregular as soon as you leave the cities.

Is there signal at Angel Falls and Los Roques?

Angel Falls / Canaima: NO network during the trip, lodges have at best very limited satellite Wi-Fi. Los Roques: almost no data, rare Wi-Fi. Plan everything offline and let people know before you go.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Venezuela eSIM plans allow hotspot: the field is shown on each Datadopt offer detail page.
