Peru holds three countries at once: a desert coast, an Andean range above 3,000 m and an Amazon basin. The Andean dry season, May to September, is when all three work, and it is also when everyone else goes.
Permits are the real constraint
Machu Picchu is sold by timed circuit, Huayna Picchu by a small daily quota, and Inca Trail permits go five to six months ahead. Decide those dates first and build the rest of the trip around them.
Trains, not roads, reach the ruins
There is no road to Aguas Calientes. The rail line from Ollantaytambo or Poroy is the only way in short of trekking, and seats sell out in high season just as the entry tickets do.
Lima deserves its own days
The capital is one of the strongest food cities in the Americas and the top tables book weeks out. Treat it as a destination with two or three nights rather than an airport you pass through twice.
Altitude before ambition
Cusco sits at 3,400 m and the Rainbow Mountain pass at 5,100 m. Two nights of acclimatisation, ideally lower in the Sacred Valley, costs less than losing a day of the trip to altitude sickness.
Iconic sites and coverage
Machu Picchu
A fifteenth-century Inca city, never finished and never found by the conquistadors, at 2,430 m on a ridge between two drops. Signal is unreliable on site and absent on the approach trails.
Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain
Banded mineral strata at 5,100 m, reached after a two-hour walk at an altitude where every step counts. No signal, a pre-dawn start, and at least one acclimatisation day beforehand.
Uros Floating Islands, Lake Titicaca
Islands woven from reeds and continuously rebuilt for centuries, on the highest navigable lake in the world. Coverage reaches out from Puno and thins further offshore.
Nazca Lines
Geoglyphs hundreds of metres across, drawn two thousand years ago and visible only from the air. The flight from Nazca or Pisco lasts about thirty minutes and is bumpier than most people expect.
Colca Canyon
Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, and the best place in the country to watch condors ride the morning thermals. Chivay has signal; the descent has none.
Huacachina Oasis
A genuine desert oasis five hours from Lima, where the afternoon is spent sandboarding the dunes. Fully covered, and the easiest stop in the country.
Sacsayhuaman
An Inca fortress of multi-tonne blocks fitted without mortar, on the heights above Cusco. Well covered, and walkable from the main square once the altitude has settled.
Amazon Rainforest, Iquitos
The largest city on earth with no road to it, and the gateway to the Pacaya-Samiria reserve. Coverage ends where the city does; lodges run on satellite, or on nothing.
