Internet in Uganda: everything you need to know
In Uganda, mobile data runs mainly on MTN and Airtel, with good 4G in Kampala, Entebbe and the main towns. The "Pearl of Africa" combines gorilla trekking, Big Five safari and Nile adventure, but the network fades fast in the parks and forests. A travel eSIM connects you on landing at Entebbe, skipping the store.
- โGood 4G in Kampala, Entebbe and the main towns. In Jinja (the source of the Nile) coverage is decent; in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (mountain gorillas), Queen Elizabeth (savanna) and towards Murchison Falls it becomes patchy.
- โDecent mobile speeds in the towns, more variable on the tracks and deep in the parks and forests.
- โSome services can be restricted at times: a VPN installed before you travel helps keep access to your usual tools.
- โHandy for Google Maps, WhatsApp (very widely used locally), ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt in Kampala), translation and coordinating transfers to the parks and lodges.

Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM really work in Uganda?
Yes. Uganda travel eSIMs ride on MTN or Airtel, with good 4G in the towns. Check the partner network in each offer's detail on Datadopt.
Is there signal during safaris and gorilla treks?
In the towns and at Jinja, yes, 4G covers well. In Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth or towards Murchison, however, signal drops fast: download your offline maps and let people know you will be off-network on safari.
Do I need a VPN in Uganda?
Sometimes. Some social networks and services have been taxed or restricted before, notably around particular events. Install a reputable VPN before you travel, installing it from inside Uganda can be hard if access is already limited.
Is an eSIM or a local SIM better?
For a tourist or business trip, the eSIM is far simpler: no in-store registration, no waiting, activation before you fly. A local SIM still makes sense for a very long stay where you need a Ugandan number.
How much data for a trip to Uganda?
Plan 5โ10 GB for one to two weeks with Maps, WhatsApp and some social media. Take more if you share the connection or make video calls home.
