Internet in Kenya: everything you need to know

Kenya has roughly 40 % internet penetration (mobile-first) and 4G mobile coverage exceeding 95 % of the population (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Safaricom dominates massively (creator of M-PESA, the world's first mobile money service in 2007), followed by Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya. 5G is live in Nairobi and Mombasa via Safaricom.

  • ●Dense 4G coverage in Nairobi (Westlands, Karen, Lavington, CBD), Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Naivasha, Nanyuki. Very good on the coast (Diani, Watamu, Lamu Town), around Mount Kenya (Nanyuki, Naro Moru). Patchier in the Maasai Mara (decent Safaricom signal in main tourist zones and tented camps β€” Talek, Sekenani, Ololaimutiek β€” but none deep in the park), Amboseli (signal at camps, weak in the park core with Kilimanjaro views), Tsavo East/West (vast areas with no signal), Samburu and Turkana (remote northern areas).
  • ●Average mobile speed ~25–50 Mbps download per Ookla (Q1 2025).
  • ●No Western services blocked : Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube, Netflix work normally. WhatsApp is overwhelmingly dominant.
  • ●ESSENTIAL : M-PESA (Safaricom) is the mobile payment revolution in Kenya β€” used by ~96 % of adults for EVERYTHING (taxi, shopping, restaurants, school fees, prepaid electricity). You probably can't open an M-PESA account as a tourist without a Kenyan ID, but ask your lodge or guide to use their account (they accept cash ↔ M-PESA conversion). Also : Bolt and Uber (Nairobi/Mombasa taxis), Glovo (delivery), Google Maps.

Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM really work in Kenya?

Yes. International eSIMs connect to Safaricom, Airtel KE or Telkom Kenya on landing at Nairobi JKIA (NBO), Wilson (WIL, domestic flights to the Mara), Mombasa (MBA), Kisumu (KIS) or Diani (UKA).

How much data for 10 days of safari?

Plan 3–6 GB for 10 days : Maps, WhatsApp, cloud photos when back in covered area (lodge transfers). No signal inside parks. No streaming on safari.

M-PESA : can I use it as a tourist?

Opening an M-PESA account as a tourist is hard (Kenyan ID required). Workarounds : ask your lodge or tour agency to pay on your behalf (they convert your cash to M-PESA), or use a bank card in major cities/hotels. Wave (M-PESA alt) is starting to emerge.

Is there signal in the Maasai Mara and Amboseli?

Mara : Safaricom signal at main camps (Talek, Sekenani, Ololaimutiek) and at the Mara Bridge, NONE deep in the park β€” guides use radios. Amboseli : signal at lodges and camps, weak in the park core. Download offline Maps and pack an InReach beacon for self-supported treks.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Kenya eSIM plans allow hotspot : handy for sharing in a safari 4x4. The field is listed on each Datadopt offer detail page.
