Internet in Russia: everything you need to know

Russia's mobile network is dense in cities: the major carriers (MTS, MegaFon, Beeline, Tele2) offer good 4G/LTE in Moscow, St Petersburg and regional centers, with 5G still marginal. Two realities weigh on travelers: since 2022, Visa and Mastercard issued abroad no longer work in Russia, and internet access is state-filtered. A prepaid eSIM, bought and activated before departure, addresses the first point by avoiding any on-site payment and registering a local SIM against your passport.

  • Good 4G in Moscow (Red Square, Kremlin), St Petersburg (Hermitage), Kazan, Sochi and along the main rail corridors. Remote Siberia and the Far North stay barely covered or not at all; on the Trans-Siberian, the connection is intermittent.
  • An honesty note: an eSIM roams on Russian networks and is therefore subject to the same national filtering. Several Western platforms are blocked (Instagram and Facebook have been banned since 2022, X is restricted, some Google services and news sites are unreachable). An eSIM does not bypass censorship: many travelers use a VPN, but Russian law restricts such tools, so check the current rules yourself.
  • WhatsApp and especially Telegram are widely used locally. Be aware that, during tensions, occasional slowdowns or shutdowns can occur: no eSIM restores a network cut at national scale. Russian dominates and English is rare outside tourist sites, so reliable data for translation and navigation is valuable.

Frequently asked questions

Why an eSIM rather than a local SIM in Russia?

Because Visa and Mastercard issued abroad have not worked in Russia since 2022: paying for a local SIM on site is hard for a visitor, and buying one often requires passport registration. A travel eSIM is bought and activated with your usual card before departure.

Does an eSIM let me reach blocked sites in Russia?

No. The eSIM roams on Russian networks and faces the same filtering: Instagram, Facebook and various sites are unreachable. An eSIM provides data, not a way around censorship. Many travelers use a VPN, but local law restricts it: check the current rules.

Does the eSIM work well in Russia?

Yes for data coverage: international eSIMs roam on MTS, MegaFon, Beeline or Tele2, with good 4G in cities. 5G stays marginal and remote areas (Siberia) are barely covered.

How much data for a trip to Russia?

For a week across Moscow and St Petersburg, 5–10 GB covers maps, translation, messaging and bookings. Add margin if you share the connection or use a VPN, which uses more.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Russia eSIM plans allow hotspot: the field is shown on each offer detail page.
