Internet in Kazakhstan: everything you need to know
Kazakhstan has 92% internet penetration and over 95% 4G mobile coverage (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). 5G is live in Almaty and Astana. An eSIM connects to Beeline KZ, Kcell or Tele2 on landing at ALA (Almaty), NQZ (Astana) or CIT (Shymkent).
- β4G coverage in major cities (Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karagandy, Aktobe) and along the main highways (Almaty-Astana, Almaty-Bishkek) ; very patchy in the steppes, Tian Shan and Mangystau desert.
- βAverage mobile speed ~30β45 Mbps download per Ookla (Q1 2025) ; Kcell (Kazakhtelecom subsidiary) has the best rural coverage.
- βSome services occasionally filtered (periodic Telegram suspensions, certain Wikipedia pages) : a VPN guarantees full access. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and YouTube work normally.
- βGreat for Yandex.Go and inDriver (rides), Wolt, Google Maps and Kaspi.kz / Halyk Bank mobile banking.

Kazakhstan is the country most people only fly over, and the reason to stop is the south-east: canyons, glacial lakes and spruce valleys within a day of Almaty. The catch is scale. Cities are modern and well covered; between them there are hundreds of kilometres of nothing.
May, June, September
The best window. The roads to the Kolsai lakes and Charyn canyon are clear, and the steppe is green in spring and gold by September.
July and August
Heat turns crushing on the steppe and in the desert, but this is the only stretch when every high pass is open. Start early and carry water.
April and October
Shoulder months, quiet and cheap, good for Almaty, Astana and the historic south. Higher up, snow may already or still be closing the tracks.
December to February
Winter is severe, well past what a European visitor expects. The slopes near Almaty run, but long excursions stop making sense.
Iconic sites and coverage
Charyn Canyon
A red sandstone canyon gullied by erosion, with a Valley of Castles whose pinnacles look like keeps. Three hours from Almaty, with no network on site.
Kolsai Lakes
Three stepped lakes in a spruce valley of the Tian Shan, linked by walking and riding trails. No signal, so download your maps before you climb.
Kaindy Lake
A lake born of a landslide, with the dead trunks of a drowned spruce forest still standing out of it. Rough track and no coverage in the valley.
Big Almaty Lake
A turquoise reservoir an hour from the city, ringed by peaks, reached by paved road and then a checkpoint. Weak signal, sometimes present.
Altyn-Emel Singing Dunes
An isolated sand massif between two ranges that booms when the wind slides the grains. A very remote reserve, with no network.
Khoja Ahmed Yasawi Mausoleum
A Timurid mausoleum left unfinished at Turkestan, carrying the widest brick dome in Central Asia. A served city, with complete coverage.
Baiterek Tower
Astana's emblem tower, gold at the top, and the clearest read you will get on a capital drawn in one stroke. Excellent network.
Green Bazaar of Almaty
The city's great covered market: horse meat, dried fruit, cheeses and spices down several aisles. Central and fully connected.
