Internet in Nepal: everything you need to know
Nepal relies on two main carriers: Ncell (Axiata group) and Nepal Telecom (NTC). 4G covers Kathmandu, Pokhara and the populated valleys well, and internet penetration exceeds 50% (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). On treks, coverage varies enormously by carrier and valley: it is THE criterion for choosing your eSIM.
- ●Good 4G in Kathmandu (Thamel, Boudhanath), Pokhara (Lakeside) and Chitwan. On the Kathmandu-Pokhara road, signal follows the valley with a few gaps.
- ●On treks: in the Everest region, NTC reaches surprisingly high (4G signal up towards Gorak Shep and at times base camp); in the Annapurnas, Ncell holds well up to Manang and Ghorepani. Above that, the lodges' paid wifi (Everest Link, AirLink) takes over.
- ●Average mobile speed around 20–40 Mbps download (Ookla, 2025): enough for Maps, WhatsApp and photo uploads; HD streaming is optimistic in the mountains.
- ●No blocked services: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube work. Handy for Pathao and inDrive (local moto-taxis and ride-hailing), summit weather and online TIMS permits.

Nepal has two trekking seasons and they are not equivalent. October and November give the clearest air of the year, just after the monsoon; March and April bring rhododendrons in bloom and hazier peaks. June to August, the monsoon closes the question.
Mountain views are a post-monsoon thing
Kathmandu and Pokhara both sit within sight of 8,000 m peaks, but only when the air is clear. October and November deliver that reliably; by late winter the haze over the valleys often hides the range entirely.
Winter air in the Kathmandu valley
From December to February, temperature inversions trap pollution in the bowl of the valley. It does not affect the high trails, but it does affect several days of sightseeing at the start and end of the trip.
What a trek actually costs
Permits, a guide and a porter, lodges and the Lukla flight are separate line items, and the flight is often the largest. Budget the two buffer days around it as part of the trek, not as spare time.
Dashain and Tihar close the offices
The two great autumn festivals fall across October and early November, exactly in peak trekking season. Trails stay open but permit offices, banks and many shops shut for several days.
Iconic sites and coverage
Everest Base Camp Trek
Twelve to fourteen days from Lukla to 5,364 m, via Namche Bazaar and Tengboche monastery. Signal appears intermittently in villages and nowhere between them: offline maps and a power bank are not optional.
Annapurna Circuit
Fifteen to twenty days around an entire massif, from subtropical forest to the high desert of Mustang over the Thorong La pass. The new road has shortened sections, so pick your variant before you leave.
Boudhanath Stupa
One of the largest stupas in the world and the centre of Tibetan life in exile in Kathmandu, circled clockwise alongside the faithful. Well covered, and at its best at dusk.
Pashupatinath Temple
The country’s most important Shaivite sanctuary, on the Bagmati, where open-air cremations run continuously. The inner precinct is for Hindus only, and photographing the pyres is best avoided.
Phewa Lake, Pokhara
A lake below the Annapurnas that mirrors the range on clear mornings, with an island temple and rowing boats for hire. Well covered, and the natural base before or after a trek.
Chitwan National Park
In the Terai lowlands, one of the last strongholds of the one-horned rhino and the Bengal tiger, explored by jeep or on foot with a ranger. Decent signal at the lodges, weak inside the park.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square
A medieval royal city of brick and carved wood, the best preserved in the valley despite the 2015 earthquake. Well covered, and best late in the day once the coaches have gone.
Lumbini
The birthplace of the Buddha, marked by a third-century BCE Ashokan pillar, inside a park of monasteries built by Buddhist nations. Signal is uneven across a site large enough to cycle.

Is there signal on the Everest Base Camp trek?

And on the Annapurna Circuit?
Ncell holds well up to Manang on the east side and Ghorepani/Poon Hill in the south. The pass crossing (Thorong La) is out of coverage: tell your family beforehand, and descend towards Muktinath to regain signal.
How much data for a 3-week trek?
Plan 5–10 GB: WhatsApp, weather, photos at the stages and offline Maps (downloaded beforehand, they use nothing). Streaming drains both plan and battery: save it for Kathmandu.
Does my European plan work in Nepal?
