Sri Lanka has roughly 60% internet penetration and 4G mobile coverage exceeding 95% of the population (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). The mobile market is dominated by Dialog Axiata (leader, ~45% share), Mobitel (Sri Lanka Telecom, ~30%), Hutch and Airtel Lanka. Commercial 5G is live in Colombo and Galle since 2023 (Dialog and Mobitel).

Does the eSIM really work in Sri Lanka?
Yes everywhere on the island except remote areas. International eSIMs connect to Dialog or Mobitel on landing at Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB), Mattala Rajapaksa (HRI) or Jaffna (JAF).
Do I need an eSIM if I have a European plan?
Sri Lanka is not in EU inclusive roaming. Out-of-plan data is very expensive (5–15 €/MB depending on carrier). A travel eSIM at 5–10 € for 5 GB beats it hands down.
How much data for 2 weeks in Sri Lanka?

Is there signal on the Kandy-Ella train and at Adam's Peak?
