Internet in the Maldives: everything you need to know
The Maldives are covered by two carriers, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives, whose 4G network stretches atoll to atoll across nearly all inhabited islands and resorts. Internet penetration exceeds 80 % (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Classic roaming here is among the world's most expensive: the eSIM is an economic no-brainer.
- ●Excellent 4G in Malé, Hulhumalé and Velana airport. Resorts and local islands (Maafushi, Dhigurah, Fulidhoo) are covered by Dhiraagu or Ooredoo; the signal carries surprisingly far over water, including during speedboat transfers and parts of seaplane flights.
- ●Average mobile speed around 30–60 Mbps download (Ookla, 2025), with 5G in Malé and at some resorts.
- ●No blocked services: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Netflix work normally.
- ●Resort wifi is often paid, slow or room-only: an eSIM with a few GB guarantees your video calls, stories and WhatsApp calls from the beach or the excursion boat.

Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM really work in the Maldives?
Yes. Maldives travel eSIMs ride on Dhiraagu or Ooredoo Maldives, which cover nearly all inhabited islands and resorts. Check the partner network in each offer's detail on Datadopt.
Isn't the resort wifi enough?
Often not: paid at many resorts, limited to the room or lobby, and slow at peak times. A 3–5 GB eSIM keeps WhatsApp, stories and video calls working everywhere, beach included.
How much data for a week in the Maldives?
Plan 3–6 GB: WhatsApp (calls included), photos and stories, some streaming. Double it if the resort wifi is paid and you'll do everything on 4G.
Is there signal on my resort island?
Nearly all resorts are covered by Dhiraagu or Ooredoo. The signal also carries over water during speedboat transfers. Only a few very isolated resorts in the southern atolls have weak signal: hotel wifi takes over there.
Does my European plan work in the Maldives?
Technically yes, but roaming there is among the world's most expensive: several euros per MB. A prepaid eSIM costs less than a single day of classic roaming.
