Mongolia has roughly 85% internet penetration and 4G mobile coverage centered on Ulaanbaatar and aimag (province) capitals (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). MobiCom, Unitel, Skytel and G-Mobile share the market. 5G is at pilot stage in Ulaanbaatar. The world's least densely populated country : rural coverage hugs tracks and relay villages.
- ●Dense 4G coverage in Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, Erdenet, Choibalsan, Mörön, Ölgii, Khovd, Dalanzadgad. Decent along major valleys (Trans-Mongolian route to Russia/China) and around Lake Khövsgöl from the Khatgal/Mörön side. PATCHY to NONE deep in the steppe, the Gobi Desert (signal at Dalanzadgad/Bayanzag for 4x4 tour starts or ger camps, none between stops), the Altai mountains (Tavan Bogd, Khovd : signal in the village, none on the mountain), the northern taiga forests (Tsaatan area), and the Great Gobi-A and Gobi-B.
