Internet in Moldova: everything you need to know
Moldova relies on three carriers: Orange Moldova, Moldcell and Unite (Moldtelecom). The country has excellent connectivity: fibre is among the cheapest in Europe and 4G/5G covers cities and roads well. Internet penetration exceeds 85% (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Moldova sits outside the EU roaming zone: without an eSIM, data is billed at international rates.
- ●Excellent 4G in Chisinau, Bălți, Cahul and along the main roads. 5G is live in the capital. Good coverage in the wine regions (Cricova, Mileștii Mici, Purcari) and around Orheiul Vechi.
- ●High average mobile speed, often 40–80 Mbps download (Ookla, 2025), thanks to very developed fixed and mobile infrastructure.
- ●No blocked services: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Netflix work normally. Telegram and Viber are widely used locally.
- ●Handy for Yango and iTaxi (local ride-hailing), Google Maps on the wine route, and the frequent hops to neighbouring Romania (Iași is just an hour away).

- Extreme heatJuly, August
- Extreme coldJanuary, February
Moldova is the least visited country in Europe, and the reason to come is underground: wine cellars measured in kilometres of tunnel. Above ground the climate is sharply continental, and the country sits outside the EU, so a European plan stops at the border.
May, June, September
The best window. The vineyards are open, Chisinau is walkable under its lime trees, and September brings the harvest and then the wine festival.
July and August
Heat settles over the plain and the underground cellars become the best refuge in the country. Country roads are dusty but passable.
April and October
Shoulder months, quiet and very cheap, good for the monasteries and the cities. Days shorten fast and some tracks turn to mud.
November to March
Winter is cold and dry, with little light. Cellars and monasteries stay open, but regional connections run slow and irregular.
Iconic sites and coverage
Cricova Winery
A network of galleries cut into limestone, toured by electric cart, with underground streets named after grape varieties. Weak signal below ground.
Milestii Mici Cellars
The largest bottle collection in the world, in kilometres of tunnel beneath the hill. No network down there, so tell someone before you descend.
Orheiul Vechi
A cave monastery dug into a cliff above a bend in the Raut, in open steppe country. Coverage uneven depending on which slope you are on.
Chisinau Central Market
The capital's market, where cheese, preserves, bulk wine and cut flowers all meet. Central, fully connected.
Soroca Fortress
A circular stone fort on the bank of the Dniester, facing Ukraine, remarkably intact for its age. Easy access, adequate network.
Capriana Monastery
One of the oldest monasteries in the country, in oak forest west of the capital, long the seat of the metropolitans. Patchy signal under the canopy.
Purcari Vineyard
An estate in the south-east near the Dniester, whose reds built the modern reputation of Moldovan wine. Well served and well covered.
Codru Forest Reserve
The great central beechwood, with trails and a bird observatory, the last remnant of the forest that once covered the region. Coverage unreliable on the tracks.
