Internet in Serbia: everything you need to know

Serbia has roughly 85% internet penetration and 4G mobile coverage exceeding 99% of the population (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Three carriers share the market: MTS (Telekom Srbija, incumbent, ~45%), Yettel Serbia (formerly Telenor, bought by PPF in 2022, ~30%) and A1 Srbija (~25%). Commercial 5G has been live since 2023 in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš.

  • Excellent 4G in Belgrade (Stari Grad, Savamala, Dorćol, Vračar, Voždovac, New Belgrade), Novi Sad, Niš, Subotica, Kragujevac, Niška Banja. Very good on highways (E70 to Croatia, E75 Hungary-North Macedonia, A1 Belgrade-Niš). Patchier in the mountains (Tara, Kopaonik, Stara Planina, Đerdap: signal at lodges, weak on trails), Danube gorges, Fruška Gora monasteries (decent signal in nearby villages).
  • Average mobile speed ~50–90 Mbps download in Belgrade per Ookla (Q1 2025), peaking 200+ Mbps on 5G.
  • Serbia is NOT in EU inclusive roaming (non-member). However a regional "Western Balkans Roaming" agreement gives Serbian subscribers free roaming in Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Montenegro since 2021. For EU travellers, Serbia stays out-of-plan: bring a travel eSIM.
  • Great for CarGo (Belgrade taxis, local Uber equivalent), Yandex.Taxi, Google Maps, Wolt (Belgrade/Novi Sad food delivery), Bus Plus (Belgrade transit), Booking, BlaBlaCar (widely used for Belgrade-Niš or Belgrade-Novi Sad), Glovo, Plus Online (mobile banking).

Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM really work in Serbia?

Yes everywhere. International eSIMs connect to MTS, Yettel or A1 Srbija on landing at Belgrade Nikola Tesla (BEG) or Niš Constantine the Great (INI).

Does my European plan work in Serbia?

No, Serbia is NOT in EU inclusive roaming (non-member). Out-of-plan rates are very expensive (often 1-3 €/MB). A travel eSIM at 4-8 € for 5 GB is much better.

How much data for a weekend in Belgrade?

For 3-4 days, 2 to 5 GB is enough: Google Maps, CarGo/Yandex, Wolt, Booking, WhatsApp, cloud photos, in-city navigation. Café WiFi (Skadarlija, Savamala) is OK but slow.

Is there signal on Mt Tara and at Kopaonik?

Tara: decent MTS/Yettel signal at Mitrovac village, Kaludjerske Bare, lodges; weak on trails (Banjska stena, Crnjeskovo). Kopaonik: excellent 4G at ski resort and at the power station, sparser off-piste.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Serbia eSIM plans allow hotspot: the field is shown on each Datadopt offer detail page.
