Internet in Ghana: everything you need to know
In Ghana, mobile data runs mainly on MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo, with good 4G in Accra, Kumasi and along the coast. Buying a local SIM requires registration with a Ghana Card or passport, a slow process for a visitor. A travel eSIM connects you on landing, skipping the store.
- โGood 4G in Accra (the capital and business hub), Kumasi (Ashanti region) and along the coast. In Cape Coast and Elmina (UNESCO-listed castles) coverage is decent; in Kakum National Park and the rural north it becomes patchy.
- โDecent mobile speeds in cities, more variable in the north and rural areas.
- โNo particular restrictions: social media, messaging and video calls work normally, a VPN is not needed.
- โHandy for Google Maps, WhatsApp (very widely used locally), ride-hailing (Bolt, Uber in Accra), coordinating a "Year of Return" diaspora trip and journeys to Kumasi, Cape Coast or the Busua and Ada beaches.

Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM really work in Ghana?
Yes. Ghana travel eSIMs ride on MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo, with good 4G in Accra, Kumasi and along the coast. Check the partner network in each offer's detail on Datadopt.
Is an eSIM or a local SIM better?
For a tourist trip, a "Year of Return" visit or a business trip, the eSIM is far simpler: no Ghana Card registration, no waiting in store, activation before you fly. A local SIM still makes sense for a very long stay where you need a Ghanaian number.
Do I need a VPN in Ghana?
No. Ghana does not restrict social networks or messaging: WhatsApp, Instagram, video calls and your usual tools work normally. A VPN is only useful if you want to reach geo-restricted content from your home country.
Is there signal at Cape Coast and Kakum?
At Cape Coast and Elmina, yes, 4G covers the towns and the castles. In Kakum National Park and on the canopy walkway signal gets thinner: download your offline maps before the trip. In the rural north, expect some areas with no coverage.
How much data for a trip to Ghana?
Plan 5โ10 GB for one to two weeks with Maps, WhatsApp and some social media. Take more if you share the connection or make video calls to family abroad.
