Internet in Senegal: everything you need to know

Senegal has roughly 60 % internet penetration and 4G mobile coverage exceeding 90 % of the population (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Orange Sénégal (leader), Free Sénégal (ex-Tigo) and Expresso (Sudatel) share the market. 5G is being rolled out in Dakar by Orange.

  • Dense 4G coverage in Dakar (Plateau, Mermoz, Almadies, Yoff, Ouakam), Saint-Louis, Thiès, Touba, Mbour/Saly, Ziguinchor. Very good on the Petite Côte (Somone, Saly, Joal-Fadiouth), at Gorée Island (20 min ferry from Dakar, decent Orange/Free signal), Lake Retba (Pink Lake). Patchier in Casamance (Cap Skirring : decent in the village, weak in the bush), the Sine-Saloum delta (signal at main islands, weak in mangroves), Niokolo-Koba Park (signal at lodges, weak in the park) and along the Mauritanian border.
  • Average mobile speed ~25–45 Mbps download in Dakar per Ookla (Q1 2025).
  • No Western services blocked : Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube, Netflix work normally. WhatsApp is dominant for contacts (hotels, agencies, drivers).
  • Great for Yango (dominant Dakar taxi, Uber not present in Senegal), Heetch, Google Maps, Wave (HUGELY used mobile money, accepts foreign passports unlike Orange Money/Free Money which require a Senegalese ID), and CBAO, Ecobank banking apps.

Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM really work in Senegal?

Yes. International eSIMs connect to Orange Sénégal, Free Sénégal or Expresso on landing at Dakar Blaise-Diagne (DSS) or Cap Skirring (CSK).

How much data for 1 week in Senegal?

For Dakar + Saint-Louis + Petite Côte, plan 3–5 GB : Maps, Yango, constant WhatsApp, cloud photos, Wave (mobile money). More for Casamance/Sine-Saloum if you remote-work.

Mobile money : Wave or Orange Money?

Wave is more accessible for travellers : account can be opened with a foreign passport, no Senegalese ID required. Orange Money (and Free Money) require a Senegalese ID. Wave covers nearly all shops, taxis and markets.

Can I use my European plan in Senegal?

Non-EU roaming is charged at premium rates (up to €10/MB). Check ; otherwise a travel eSIM is much cheaper. Orange sometimes offers special deals for clients travelling in West Africa.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Senegal eSIM plans allow hotspot : the field is listed on each Datadopt offer detail page.
