Internet in Algeria: everything you need to know
Algeria relies on three carriers: Mobilis (state-owned), Djezzy and Ooredoo Algeria. 4G covers the north, where most of the population lives, and internet penetration exceeds 76 % (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). 5G is only starting. EU roaming does not apply: without a travel eSIM, the bill climbs fast.
- ●Dense 4G coverage in Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba, Tlemcen and along the coast. Decent across the High Plateaus (Sétif, Batna). In the Sahara, signal concentrates on towns and main roads: Ghardaïa, Ouargla, Tamanrasset and Djanet are covered, but plan offline GPS between stops.
- ●Average mobile speed around 25–45 Mbps download per Ookla (2025): enough for Maps, WhatsApp and standard-quality video.
- ●No permanent blocking of Western services: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube all work. Note: temporary nationwide mobile-internet restrictions happen every year during the baccalaureate exams (mid-June).
- ●Great for Yassir (the essential local ride-hailing app), Google Maps, WhatsApp (widely used) and home-country banking apps.

Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM really work in Algeria?
Yes. Algeria travel eSIMs ride on Mobilis, Djezzy or Ooredoo Algeria. Check the partner-network list in each offer's detail on Datadopt.
Does my European plan work in Algeria?
Algeria is outside the EU roaming zone: data is billed at international rates, often several euros per MB. A prepaid travel eSIM is almost always cheaper from the first days.
How much data for 2 weeks in Algeria?
Plan 5–10 GB: Maps, WhatsApp (calls included), photos, Yassir and some streaming. Double it if you share the connection.
Is there signal in the Sahara?
In southern towns (Ghardaïa, Ouargla, Tamanrasset, Djanet), yes. Between stops, no: the desert is out of coverage. Download offline maps and playlists before hitting the road.
Why does the internet cut out in June?
Authorities restrict mobile internet nationwide during the baccalaureate exams (mid-June), a few hours a day. It is temporary and affects all carriers, eSIMs included.
