Internet in Cuba: everything you need to know
Cuba is the Caribbean's most singular case: a single carrier, ETECSA (mobile brand Cubacel), limited infrastructure and some of the slowest, most expensive internet in the region. Penetration is rising but stays under 75 % (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). A "Cuba" travel eSIM roams on ETECSA's network, which is often simpler and more reliable than buying a tourist SIM on arrival.
- ●Decent 3G/4G in Havana, Varadero, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad and Cienfuegos. Weak as soon as you leave the cities: in Viñales, the Sierra Maestra or on the cays, signal is intermittent or absent.
- ●Very modest speeds: often 5–20 Mbps, rarely more. Forget HD streaming and large downloads; aim for messaging, browsing and maps.
- ●Cuba filters or throttles some services and sites: a VPN (installed BEFORE departure, since app stores are hard to reach on the island) helps keep WhatsApp, browsing and your usual tools working.
- ●Handy for WhatsApp (the dominant channel for Cubans and casas particulares), offline maps (Maps.me / Organic Maps, essential) and confirming bookings. Do NOT expect comfortable remote work.

Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM really work in Cuba?
Yes, "Cuba" travel eSIMs roam on the ETECSA/Cubacel network. It is often more reliable than buying a local tourist SIM, but expect modest speeds: Cuba has one of the slowest networks in the Caribbean.
Do I need a VPN in Cuba?
It is recommended: some services and sites are filtered or throttled. Install and test your VPN BEFORE departure, since app stores are hard to reach once on the island.
How much data for 2 weeks in Cuba?
Plan 3–5 GB: WhatsApp, maps, browsing and bookings. The network won't allow heavy use anyway; the point is a reliable basic connection.
Is there signal outside the cities?
Little or none. In Viñales, the Sierra Maestra, on the cays and along much of the roads, signal is weak or absent. Download offline maps and tell your accommodation your arrival plans.
Can I work remotely from Cuba?
Barely. Speeds and stability don't suit serious remote work (video calls, large files). Treat Cuba as a partial digital detox.
