Internet in Cuba: everything you need to know
Cuba is the Caribbean's most singular case: a single carrier, ETECSA (mobile brand Cubacel), limited infrastructure and some of the slowest, most expensive internet in the region. Penetration is rising but stays under 75% (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). A "Cuba" travel eSIM roams on ETECSA's network, which is often simpler and more reliable than buying a tourist SIM on arrival.
- ●Decent 3G/4G in Havana, Varadero, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad and Cienfuegos. Weak as soon as you leave the cities: in Viñales, the Sierra Maestra or on the cays, signal is intermittent or absent.
- ●Very modest speeds: often 5–20 Mbps, rarely more. Forget HD streaming and large downloads; aim for messaging, browsing and maps.

December to April is dry and the temperature holds through the day: it is the island's season. The hurricane season runs June to November with a September peak, and summer is both the hottest and the wettest part of the year.
Plan the whole trip in cash
Foreign cards work poorly and ATMs are scarce and often empty. You arrive with the cash for the entire stay, in euros rather than dollars, and change it on the island through official channels.

Two mains voltages, sometimes in one building
Much of the housing stock runs at 110 volts and some newer hotels at 220, which is why the block below carries no value. Check the socket before plugging in, and bring an adapter covering four plug types.
The casa particular is the real network
Rooms in private homes are legal, regulated and everywhere, and hosts recommend one another from town to town. It is the most reliable way to string stops together without booking online.
Iconic sites and coverage
Old Havana
Four colonial squares joined by streets restored in patches, where 1950s American cars still work as taxis. The contrast between the finished façades and the ones still waiting reads block by block.
Malecon of Havana
Eight kilometres of sea wall along the Atlantic, serving the whole city as promenade, living room and meeting place at sunset. On northerly days the waves come over and close the avenue.
Vinales Valley
Mogotes, limestone towers with vertical walls, rising out of tobacco fields still worked with oxen. The drying barns are open to visitors, the caves are crossed by boat, and signal goes as soon as you leave the village.
Trinidad
A sixteenth-century sugar town of cobbled streets and coloured shutters, left almost intact because the economy moved away. The Valle de los Ingenios next door keeps the plantation ruins.
Varadero Beach
Twenty kilometres of white sand on a narrow peninsula, where the island's beach hotels are concentrated. It is the part of the country most separated from the rest, and many stays never leave it.
Bay of Pigs
A coral wall reachable from the shore, among the easiest in the Caribbean, with freshwater cenotes just inland. The site is isolated on the south coast, with no network and no shops: everything is prepared beforehand.
Santiago de Cuba
The country's second city, at the eastern end, more Caribbean than Havana and the birthplace of son and trova. The San Pedro de la Roca fort guards the mouth of the bay.
Cienfuegos
A city founded by French settlers in the nineteenth century, its neoclassical grid centre unlike anywhere else on the island. The Palacio de Valle, out on the point, is its deliberate excess.
