Internet in Bhutan: everything you need to know

In Bhutan, mobile data runs on B-Mobile (Bhutan Telecom) and TashiCell, with decent 4G in Thimphu, Paro, Punakha and the inhabited valleys. The country runs a "high value, low volume" tourism policy with a per-day Sustainable Development Fee, and most visitors travel with a licensed guide and a pre-booked itinerary. A travel eSIM connects you on landing, skipping the store.

  • Good 4G in Thimphu (the capital), Paro (the airport valley, home to Taktsang / Tiger's Nest monastery), Punakha (its dzong and valley) and Bumthang (the central valleys). Signal fades on high passes such as Dochula.
  • Very mountainous country: coverage disappears on multi-day treks (Druk Path, Jomolhari). The eSIM is for towns and coordinating with your guide or hotel, not for the high mountains: download your offline maps.
  • Internet is lightly restricted: a VPN is generally not needed to keep access to your usual tools.
  • Handy for Google Maps, WhatsApp (to keep your usual number), coordinating journeys with your guide, translation and sharing photos from the valleys.

Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM really work in Bhutan?

Yes. Bhutan travel eSIMs ride on B-Mobile (Bhutan Telecom) or TashiCell, with decent 4G in Thimphu, Paro, Punakha and the valleys. Check the partner network in each offer's detail on Datadopt.

Is there signal during treks and on the way up to Tiger's Nest?

The climb to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) stays within the Paro valley, where signal is usually available. On multi-day treks such as the Druk Path or Jomolhari, however, coverage disappears: download your offline maps and let your guide know.

Is an eSIM or a local SIM better?

Since most visitors travel with a licensed guide and a pre-booked itinerary, the eSIM is the simplest option: activation before you fly, connection from Paro, no store visit. A local SIM only makes sense for a very long stay where you need a Bhutanese number.

Do I need a VPN in Bhutan?

No, generally. Internet is lightly restricted in Bhutan and your usual apps work normally. A VPN stays optional, mainly if you handle sensitive data over hotel Wi-Fi.

How much data for a trip to Bhutan?

Moderate use is enough: plan 3–5 GB for one to two weeks, since you will spend a lot of time off-network in the mountains. Take a little more if you share the connection or make video calls from the valleys.
