Internet in Namibia: everything you need to know
Namibia has roughly 53% internet penetration and about 80% 4G mobile coverage by population, but on less than 30% of the landmass (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). It's the world's second least densely populated country : mobile coverage hugs the road network, the rest is vast and disconnected.
- ●4G coverage in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Lüderitz, Ondangwa, Oshakati and Tsumeb. 3G/EDGE along the B1 (Windhoek-Otjiwarongo-Etosha) and B2 (Windhoek-Swakopmund). Near-zero coverage on secondary gravel roads (C13, D707), in NamibRand, Kaokoland and the Skeleton Coast.
- ●Average mobile speed ~25–40 Mbps download in urban zones per Ookla : far lower elsewhere.
- ●No Western services blocked : Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube and Netflix work normally when you have signal. WhatsApp is dominant for contacts.

In Namibia the season is chosen on two counts: the state of the gravel roads and how tightly the wildlife is concentrated around waterholes. The dry season delivers both, which is why it is simultaneously the best and the most expensive time to come.
May, June, September
The sweet spot for a self-drive. Tracks are dry, vegetation is low so animals are visible, and the lodges are not yet full. Desert nights are cold, occasionally well below freezing before dawn.
July and August
Peak visitor season and also the best game viewing in Etosha, when animals mass at the waterholes. Park camps book out far ahead and rates follow.
April and October
Two shoulder months with opposite characters. April leaves the landscape green after the rains with exceptional light; October runs very hot by day but stays quiet and clear.
January and February
The wet season. Some tracks become impassable after a storm, a river bed can cut a route within hours, and part of the camp network closes. It is also when the country is greenest and emptiest.
Iconic sites and coverage
Sossusvlei
The red dunes of the Namib, best climbed at first light while the ridge is still shaded. Signal is gone long before the park gate, so navigation and bookings have to be offline.
Deadvlei
A white clay pan studded with acacias dead for centuries, ringed by the highest dunes. Twenty minutes on foot from the car park, with no coverage at all.
Etosha National Park
A vast salt pan fringed by waterholes, where the method is to wait rather than to search. Signal exists only near the camps, so send the message before you drive in, not during.
Fish River Canyon
A gash hundreds of metres deep in a desert plateau, viewed from a series of points along the rim. Remote, unconnected, and with very little in the way of services on the approach.
Skeleton Coast
A shoreline of fog and wrecks where the desert runs into the cold Atlantic. Fuel stops are far apart and coverage is close to nil, so the margin that matters is the one in the tank.
Swakopmund
The seaside town of German colonial architecture wedged between dunes and ocean, and the natural resupply point of any route. Full coverage, and where everything gets recharged.
Spitzkoppe
Granite inselbergs rising alone out of the plain, with rock art and campsites under natural arches. Signal shifts depending on which side of the rock you are on.
Twyfelfontein
One of southern Africa's densest concentrations of rock engravings, cut into red sandstone slabs. Guided visit only, and coverage is patchy.

Does the eSIM really work in Namibia?
Yes in cities and along main highways. International eSIMs connect to MTC or Telecom Namibia on landing at Windhoek (WDH or ERS). Outside cities, signal is limited : it's the nature of the country.
How much data for a 2-week roadtrip?
Plan 3–6 GB for 2 weeks : you'll only have signal in Windhoek, Swakopmund and a few villages. Maps, WhatsApp, cloud photos when back in town. No streaming in the bush.
Is there signal at Sossusvlei and Etosha?
Sossusvlei : signal at Sesriem (park entrance, MTC 3G/4G), none in the dunes (Big Daddy, Deadvlei). Etosha : signal at Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni (lodges), weak/none on park tracks. Download offline Maps before entering.
