Internet in Bolivia: everything you need to know
Bolivia has roughly 65 % internet penetration and over 85 % 4G mobile coverage (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Entel (state incumbent), Tigo (Millicom) and Viva (Trilogy) share the market. 5G is very limited to La Paz and Santa Cruz.
- ●4G coverage in major cities (La Paz, El Alto, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Sucre, Oruro, Potosí) and along main highways. Patchier in the Altiplano (signal in Uyuni town, weak on the salt flats), the Amazon (Rurrenabaque, Madidi : signal in town, none in the jungle), the Yungas (Death Road) and around Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian side (Copacabana OK, Isla del Sol : limited).
- ●Average mobile speed ~20–35 Mbps download per Ookla (Q1 2025).
- ●No Western services blocked : Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube, Netflix work normally. WhatsApp is dominant for contacts (hotels, Uyuni tour operators).
- ●Great for Yango / InDriver (La Paz/Santa Cruz taxis, Uber less present), Google Maps, offline Maps.me (essential on the salt flats and in the Amazon), Tigo Money (local mobile money) and the Mi Teleférico (La Paz cable car) app.
