Internet in Nicaragua: everything you need to know

Nicaragua has roughly 55–65% internet penetration, with 4G coverage concentrated in the cities and along the Pacific coast (source: ITU DataHub). The market is a duopoly: Claro (América Móvil) and Tigo (Millicom, which acquired Movistar Nicaragua in 2019). Commercial 5G is not yet deployed. Coverage is good on the Managua, Granada, León and San Juan del Sur axis, but patchier on the islands and in rural areas.

  • Decent 4G in Managua, Granada (colonial city), León (Cerro Negro, sandboarding), Masaya (volcano), Matagalpa (coffee highlands), San Juan del Sur (surf) and along the Pacific coast. Patchier on Ometepe Island (two volcanoes on Lake Nicaragua: fine signal in the towns, weak elsewhere). On the Caribbean side: Big Corn Island gets 4G, but Little Corn Island has NO cellular network (only Wi-Fi in some lodgings).
  • Download Google Maps and Maps.me offline before Ometepe, the Corn Islands, the Río San Juan and the rural north and east. The Pacific belt and colonial cities stay well connected.
  • Great for WhatsApp (universal), inDrive (ride-hailing; Uber is not present), Google Maps. A local SIM requires registration: a travel eSIM activates remotely and avoids that step for a short stay.

Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM work in Nicaragua?

Yes. International eSIMs connect to Claro or Tigo on landing at Managua (MGA). 4G coverage is decent on the Pacific axis and in the cities; the islands and rural areas are patchier.

Is there signal on Ometepe and the Corn Islands?

Ometepe has signal in the towns but weakens elsewhere. Big Corn Island has 4G, but Little Corn Island has no cellular network, only Wi-Fi in some lodgings. Prepare offline.

Do I need an eSIM if I have a European plan?

Nicaragua is not in EU inclusive roaming and out-of-plan data is expensive. A travel eSIM is far cheaper and activates before departure, with no local SIM to register.

How much data for two weeks in Nicaragua?

For Managua + Granada + León + San Juan del Sur, plan 5–10 GB: WhatsApp, offline Google Maps, inDrive and cloud photos. Usage drops on Little Corn, where there is no network.

Can I share the connection with other devices?

Most Nicaragua eSIM plans allow hotspot: the field is shown on each offer detail page.
