Internet in Iceland: everything you need to know
Iceland has over 99% internet penetration (the highest worldwide) and 4G/5G mobile coverage exceeding 99% of inhabited areas (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). Síminn, Vodafone Iceland and Nova share the market. Iceland is in the EEA, so your EU plan gets EU roaming.
- ●Excellent 4G/5G coverage in Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, Selfoss, Ísafjörður and along the entire Ring Road (Route 1). Very good on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, the Golden Circle (Geysir, Gullfoss, Þingvellir), the south coast (Vík, Jökulsárlón, Höfn) and the Westfjords. PATCHY to NONE on F-roads (Highlands 4x4 tracks : Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja, Hveravellir), in some deep Westfjords valleys and on glaciers (Vatnajökull, Langjökull).
- ●Average mobile speed ~100–150 Mbps download per Ookla (Q1 2025).
- ●No Western services blocked : Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, YouTube, Netflix work normally. WhatsApp is used but less dominant than in Southern Europe.
- ●Great for Hopp Reykjavík (local taxi + e-scooters), Google Maps, SafeTravel.is (URGENT : register your itinerary in the Highlands, weather/road alerts), Vegasjá (real-time road conditions), Vedur.is (official Icelandic weather), and Aurora Forecast (Northern Lights hunting).
