Internet in Belgium: everything you need to know
Belgium has a 95% internet penetration rate and 4G/5G coverage above 99% of the population (source: ITU DataHub, 2024). 5G is deployed across all major cities. Belgium is in the EU, so EU mobile plans roam at home rates (RLAH) : but a dedicated travel eSIM remains useful for visitors from the UK, Switzerland, USA or other non-EU countries.
- ●4G/5G coverage in every city (Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, Liège, Charleroi) and along the SNCB rail network, including the Ardennes and the North Sea coast.
- ●Average mobile download speed around 90–130 Mbps per Ookla (Q1 2025).
- ●EU/EEA travellers benefit from Roam-Like-At-Home (RLAH); a dedicated eSIM mainly helps non-EU travellers (UK, US, CH) avoid roaming fees.
- ●Perfect for SNCB Belgian Rail, STIB-MIVB (Brussels transit), De Lijn (Flanders), TEC (Wallonia), Google Maps, Bolt, Uber and Bancontact mobile payments.

Price per GB in Belgium: what our data shows
According to the Datadopt Observatory, the lowest price per GB recorded in Belgium comes down to 0.08 €/GB, across a sample of 2,625 fixed-volume offers retained for the measurement. That floor is reached on large data bundles : a 5 GB plan over 30 days costs noticeably more per GB. The real differentiator is still the depth of the offer : the more plans compete, the easier it is to find the duration and data volume that fit your trip.

Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM really work in Belgium?
Yes. Most international eSIMs connect to Proximus or Orange Belgium the moment you land at Brussels-Zaventem or Charleroi. Coverage is excellent across the entire country.
Do I need a VPN in Belgium?
No. Belgium does not restrict Western services. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, X and Netflix all work normally.
Can I use my European plan in Belgium?
Yes : EU/EEA Roam-Like-At-Home applies, so your French, German or Spanish plan works at the same price as at home. A dedicated eSIM matters mainly for non-EU travellers or to preserve your monthly EU quota.
What is the best eSIM for Brussels or a Benelux trip?
For 3–5 days in Brussels, 3 GB is plenty. For a Benelux trip combining Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg, look for a multi-country EU regional plan that covers all three at no extra cost.
Does the eSIM work in trains and tunnels (e.g. the Boortmeerbeek tunnel)?
Yes on the entire SNCB network and through most road/rail tunnels. Coverage is continuous on the Thalys / Eurostar routes through Belgium.
Can I share my connection with other devices?
Most Belgium eSIM plans allow hotspot sharing. The detail is shown on every offer on Datadopt.
